Playhouse in Oxford History
The Playhouse in Oxford is a historic theatre that has been entertaining audiences since the 17th century. The theatre has undergone many changes over the years, but has remained a cultural institution in the heart of the city.
The original theatre was built in 1661, and was known as The Theatre. It was later renamed the Duke's Theatre after it was taken over by the Duke of York, who later became King James II. The theatre was located on the current site of the Sheldonian Theatre, and was known for hosting plays by famous playwrights such as William Shakespeare and Ben Jonson.
In the 18th century, the theatre was rebuilt and became known as the New Theatre. It was designed by architect Edward Shepherd and featured a new proscenium arch, which was a popular design feature at the time. The theatre was also used for lectures and other events, and was a popular gathering place for the local community.
In the 19th century, the theatre underwent further renovations and was renamed the Theatre Royal. The interior was updated with new seating and stage equipment, and the façade was redesigned to include a neoclassical portico. During this time, the theatre was also used for political meetings and public debates.
In the early 20th century, the theatre changed ownership several times and underwent more renovations. In 1923, it was renamed the New Theatre and was converted into a cinema. However, it continued to host live performances on occasion.
In the 1950s, the theatre was purchased by the Oxford Playhouse Trust and was renovated to become a dedicated theatre once again. It was renamed the Oxford Playhouse, and has since been known for its diverse programme of plays, musicals, and other performances.
Today, the Playhouse is a thriving cultural institution that continues to entertain and inspire audiences of all ages. Its rich history and commitment to the arts make it a cherished part of the Oxford community, and a must-visit destination for anyone interested in theatre and culture.
