His Majesty's Theatre Aberdeen History
His Majesty's Theatre in Aberdeen, Scotland is a beloved cultural landmark that has been entertaining audiences for over a century. Located in the city centre, the theatre has a rich history that spans back to its opening in 1906.
The theatre was designed by renowned architect Frank Matcham and is considered to be one of his finest works. The building features an elegant façade, a grand entrance, and a stunning auditorium. The interior is adorned with ornate plasterwork, crystal chandeliers, and a beautiful dome ceiling. The theatre was designed to accommodate a wide range of performances, from theatre and opera to ballet and music concerts.
When His Majesty's Theatre first opened its doors on December 3, 1906, it was considered to be one of the most advanced theatres in the world. It was the first theatre in Scotland to have its own electrically operated stage and the first theatre in the UK to have a revolving stage. These innovations allowed for more elaborate sets and more dynamic performances.
Over the years, His Majesty's Theatre has hosted many famous performers and productions. In the 1920s, it was a popular venue for silent films and hosted screenings of classics like "The Gold Rush" and "The Phantom of the Opera." In the 1950s, the theatre hosted many famous comedians, including Morecambe and Wise and Benny Hill.
During World War II, the theatre was closed for several years due to the blackout regulations, but it reopened in 1943 with a performance of "The Cherry Orchard." In the years that followed, the theatre continued to be a cultural hub for the city, hosting everything from pantomimes and musicals to Shakespeare plays and ballets.
In 1995, the theatre underwent a major renovation to restore its original features and modernize its facilities. This included upgrading the seating, installing air conditioning, and improving the backstage area. The renovation took over two years to complete and cost over £7 million.
Today, His Majesty's Theatre continues to be one of the most beloved cultural institutions in Aberdeen. It hosts a wide range of performances each year, including touring productions of West End shows, comedy acts, and local productions. Its rich history and stunning architecture make it a must-visit destination for anyone interested in theatre and the arts.
