Empire Theatre Sunderland History
The Empire Theatre in Sunderland, located on High Street West, has a rich and varied history that dates back over a century.
Originally opened in 1907 as the Empire Palace Theatre of Varieties, it was designed by the renowned theatre architect Frank Matcham. The theatre quickly became a popular destination for both local residents and visitors to the city, offering a wide variety of entertainment, including vaudeville acts, musical performances, and even boxing matches.
Over the years, the Empire Theatre underwent a number of changes and renovations, including a major refurbishment in 1925, during which the interior was modernized and updated with new fixtures and fittings.
During World War II, the Empire Theatre served as an important cultural hub for the local community, providing entertainment and distraction during a difficult and uncertain time. Many famous entertainers, including Bob Hope and Laurel and Hardy, performed at the theatre during this period.
In the 1960s, the Empire Theatre was sold to the Rank Organization and underwent another renovation, during which the stage was expanded and modernized, and new technical equipment was installed.
After years of declining attendance and financial difficulties, the Empire Theatre was eventually closed in 1985. However, it was later reopened in 2004, following a major renovation project that saw the theatre restored to its former glory. The refurbishment included updates to the seating and technical equipment, as well as a new foyer and improved accessibility for visitors.
Today, the Empire Theatre remains an important cultural landmark in Sunderland, offering a wide range of shows and performances, from musicals and plays to comedy acts and live music. Its rich history and beautiful architecture continue to attract visitors from around the world, and it remains a beloved institution in the local community.
