Yesterday, UK Theatre Community website Dress Circle lost the pitch battle on stage to Global Teacher at the popular Thinking Digital conference.
The previous day both projects had battled 10 other startups to make it through to the head to head with Dress Circle winning the judges vote and Global Teacher winning the audience one.
Both teams excelled in their presentation to the audience but with such different ideas, the choice was between a hardware CIC that aims to deliver educational resources and projects to children in Kenya or a website that reminds you that Legally Blonde the musical is ending its run in a few weeks.
It certainly was a tough one.
Global Teacher were crowned the worthy winners taking home a cheque for £1000 whilst Dom took home two M&S canned cocktails to have on the train that he bought at the station.
Dress Circle Co-Founder Dom Hodgson (who also presented) said "Global Teacher is an excellent idea and I look forward to seeing what they do in the future, I was a bit worried that the audience couldn't see me at first as my shirt matched most of the stage.
Although I'm disappointed to not win, it would have been really awkward to collect the prize if we had... I'd have done it, don't get me wrong but it still would have been awkward.”
With a public launch next week, the Dress Circle team hope that their parents will stop being ashamed of them for the loss by then and start answering their phone calls.
One anonymous member of the team has started writing a one man show about the experience titled "I should have done it in a Geordie accent".
In all seriousness, the entire team thanks Herb, Emma (and even Marie), the entire Thinking Digital team, the attendees, our fellow competitors and of course the audience who provided some great conversation and support (if not votes)
