What they loved
- Wow. This really is a SPECIAL show. Lifelong MJ fan here and I absolutely hate tribute shows or impersonators, so I never saw Thriller Live. This is something else entirely. Needs to win awards for choreography, sound and lighting. The second act performance of Thriller was also so jaw on the floor amazing, it got a standing ovation mid-show. I’ve seen about 150 musicals in my life and of the jukebox shows, conceptually this was like nothing I’ve seen before.
What they didn't enjoy
- Obviously not historically accurate. Creates some weird drama about a financial crisis that didn’t exist until a good 10 years after the setting of the show (for much more boring reasons), but it was necessary. For the child actors, the cast were a little distracting because vocally, they were not even a fraction as good as needed, which is strange because I’ve seen those kids in other productions and they were great. When Berry Gordy comments on little Michael saying that “he sounds like he’s been singing about heartbreak for 30 years”, I was like “no, he really doesn’t”. To emulate child Michael Jackson however, it’s near impossible.
