This 1999 television movie soundtrack is more faithful to the original stage production and includes the songs ‘NYC’ and ‘Something Was Missing’, not used in the 1982 motion picture starring Albert Finney and Carol Burnett. Music by Charles Strouse and lyrics by Martin Charnin, it tells the story of orphan Annie and her longing to find her real parents. Although this dream never materializes, Annie does find happiness: cue Finale.


In the title role of Annie is Alicia Morton, who sings beautifully, particularly her rendition of ‘Tomorrow’ which, due to the orchestrations, has a lullaby feel to it. Annie goes into her own world during this number and takes the listener with her, more so in this version than other recordings of this show. As Miss Hannigan, Kathy Bates has a softer approach than Ms Burnett’s iconic performance - which is hard to forget, despite Bates’ best efforts. ‘Little Girls’ seems a tad restrained, although she pulls off the short reprise of this number towards the end with gusto. There are good performances by Victor Garber (Daddy Warbucks), Audra McDonald (Grace), Alan Cumming (Rooster), a fleeting, if not perfectly cast appearance by Kristin Chenoweth (Lily St Regis) and a cameo turn by Broadway’s original Annie, Andrea McArdle as the Star-To-Be.

CD highlights include the previously mentioned ‘Tomorrow’, the infectious ‘You’re Never Fully Dressed Without A Smile’ performed by the orphans and ‘Maybe/Tomorrow (reprise)’ sung with elegance and grace, by Grace (Audra McDonald). A touching moment in the show and delivered on this recording with heartfelt sincerity.

Orphan Annie has wrapped them all around her cute little finger, but there is definitely a touch of the original magic lost along the way. Despite a few ups and downs, this recording should appeal and entertain most. For true Annie enthusiasts, I would still say the original motion picture recording is the best, but this one is certainly worth a listen. View Less
