As a popular balladeer Johnny Mercer was, as one of his songs aptly reminds us, “too marvellous for words”. A versatile performer, he made the songs of others a memorable foil for his colourful Southern style, but it is most probably upon such axiomatic lyrics as ‘Fools Rush In’ (1940) and Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate The Positive (1944) that his fame now rests.  In a career spanning forty years, Mercer’s rare combination of wit and vitality were at the disposal the finest songwriters of his day and, whereas his earliest Broadway ventures were ill-fated, his later influence in Hollywood and Tin Pan Alley were far-reaching and enduring.
